The Delhi Metro railway service has become a boon for the people of Saddi Dilli and it is continuously expanding leaps and bounds. The metro railway has been very successful in reducing the city’s traffic and pollution levels. Expansion plans of the Delhi Metro started especially for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. After the Commonwealth Games were over the construction of other important lines are still under progress and three new lines have been recently added.
Delhi Metro has been built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC). As of November 2010, DMRC operates around 2,700 trips daily between 6:00 and 23:00 running with an interval of 2 minutes 30 seconds between trains at peak frequency. The trains are mainly of four coaches, but due to increase in passenger’s numbers, six-coach trains are also added on the Yellow Line (Jahangirpuri to HUDA city center), Blue Line (Dwarka sec −21 to Vaishali/NOIDA city center) and Violet Line (Central Secretariat to Badarpur). The Delhi Metro has an average daily ridership of 1.8 million commuters, and, as of July 2011, had carried over 1.25 billion commuters since its inception. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been certified by the United Nations as the first metro rail and rail-based system in the world to get “carbon credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions” and helping in reducing pollution levels in the city by 630,000 tons every year.
Although the Delhi Metro is not the first in India but it can be said to be the first of its kind in the country. Constructed with the utmost architectural brilliance and state of art facility the Delhi metro is very different from the other metro rails in the world. Apart from being technologically sound the one thing that has been given prime importance within the Delhi metro is security.
The construction of the Delhi Metro has been spanned in a phased manner. Most of the routes under Phase 1 were completed before 2010. The Phase II covers almost 79 stations and was successfully completed in 2010. The other projects in the pipeline are Phase III and IV which have a network spanning over 413 km and are expected to be ready by the end of 2020.
