Remembering Gandhi Ji on his 143rd birthday today.
The today’s Gandhi Smriti Museum was formerly known as the Birla House or Birla Bhavan which was the residence of industrialist BD Birla. The museum today is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and this Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum was established here in 2005. It is situated on the Tees January Road, in Saddi Dilli. It is the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on January 30, 1948.
The father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated here on his way to offer customary evening prayers. The place today houses a large ensemble of photographs with a few personal belongings of Gandhi Ji. A series of small dolls, houses and terracotta dolls illustrating the Mahatma’s life are the attractions at this museum. A multi-media show is also held between 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm on highlights of Gandhi Ji’s life.
This place was acquired by the Government of India in 1971 and was opened for general public on August 15, 1973 and was renamed the Gandhi Smriti (Gandhi Remembrance). The museum in the building houses a number of articles associated with Gandhi Ji’s life and death. Visitors can tour the building and grounds, viewing the preserved room where Gandhi Ji lived and the place on the grounds where he was shot while holding his nightly public walk. The Martyr’s Column now marks the place where Gandhi Ji, the “Father of the Nation” was assassinated.
