Out of all the interesting facts, to start with the one I like the most is, that Saddi Dilli has been ranked as the 7th most expensive office hotspot in the world. A major reason for the same is the booming economy of our country, our ever so growing population, people from all across India wanting to get settled in saddi dilli and of course the MNC’s who want to set up offices in India after the government had opened gates for FDI’s. Leaves us with little commercial space to share and so the real estate is on an all time high.
Saddi dilli’s DTC runs the world’s largest fleet of environment-friendly CNG buses and that’s the reason why we have won the United States Department of Energy’s first ‘Clean Cities International Partner of the Year’ award for ‘‘bold efforts to curb air pollution and support alternative fuel initiatives’’ in 2003. The DTC was once called the DTU or Delhi Transport Undertaking. In early 50s and 60s, no bus was allowed to carry more than its seating capacity and an other 12 standing passengers at the most. As a matter of fact the entire public transport of the city runs on environment friendly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
Saddi dilli is one of the ‘greenest’ cities in the world with a green
cover of almost 20%. The ridge is the largest city forest in saddi dilli, and is also known as the ‘green lungs’ of the city. The ridge is a northern extension of the Aravalli ranges and protects saddi dilli from the sandy winds of the west. The ridge makes saddi dilli the world’s second most bird-rich Capital city after Nairobi in Kenya. Saddi dilli has the third largest tree-cover among the cities in India. Compared to the Himalayas, which are 50 million years old, saddi dilli’s ridge still stands with a whopping age of 1500 million years!
Saddi dilli has hosted two major international games, in 1984 Asian Games and in 2010 common wealth games. The 2010 Commonwealth Games were the largest and reportedly the most expensive Commonwealth Games held till date.
Saddi dilli has been the center of power for most Muslim dynasties that ruled from the 12th century onwards. Qutub Minar in Saddi Dilli is the world’s tallest brick minaret. The walled city of saddi dilli originally had fourteen gates out of which five are still standing. The inspiration’s behind their names were
- Ajmeri Gate: faced Ajmer in Rajasthan
- Lahori Gate: faced Lahore in Pakistan
- Kashmiri Gate: faced north towards Kashmir
- Delhi Gate: opened a road to the earlier cities of Saddi Dilli
- Turkman Gate: was named after pious saint Hazrat Shah Turkam
