Janpath in Hindi means the People’s walkway. Located in the heart of Saddi Dilli, Connaught Place, it is one of the main road markets in Dilli. This market is no less than a heaven for budget shoppers and travelers, buyers of souvenirs, handicrafts and garments and other Indian antiques. The place offers a variety of localized fast-food options as well and one can never remain hungry for long.
There is an abundance of walking vendors selling trinkets such as necklaces, drums, horns, post cards, etc, particularly to the foreigners. One can also shop for maps from the tourist office at the beginning of the market. There is just one key advice for all the shoppers heading towards the Janpath Market and that is ‘BARGAINING’, on whatever big or small you are willing to buy, be sure to amply bargain and see the vendors come down to half the price they initially quoted.
It is at times fun to see the walking vendors and even the beggars communicating with the foreigners in their native language. I have always pondered on a point and have not been able to find its answer as yet; the point is how on earth these guys find out the nationality of a foreigner just by looking at him and who teaches them all the linguistics and to such precision.
Although I have my doubts on the literacy level of these guys, however looking at them, one can be rest assured that under proper guidance and training, these street smart guys can take the corporate world by the storm. Janpath Market is generally closed on Sundays.
