With the ever increasing inflation and the cost of living in Dillli, there will soon be a time, when the shoddy jhuggis (Slums) would become costlier than the most lavish penthouses. An evident example which forces us to think likewise is, our bai’s (domestic help) are paying more rentals than ourselves.
Normally for a place which is 8*10 SqFt or less, a rental of INR 2500.00 a month is fixed. The unit rate for a jhuggi thus comes to INR 30.00 per SqFt, which is equal to paying INR 30,000.00 per month for a 1000 SqFt two bed room apartment. Unlike the jhuggi the apartment has amenities like running water, electricity and toilets. If without these amenities a jhuggi costs as much, obviously after adding all these amenities, only the rich and the affluent will be able to afford a stay in them.
We all are very well aware about the single rule of the land which is premium location = premium price. The same applies to jhuggis also without any exception whatsoever. If the new entrant is hell bent, on renting a dream jhuggi near the city or near any other posh localities of Saddi Dilli, the land mafias would obviously make him shell out a fortune and at times, the prospect inhabitant is asked to pay an years rental in advance.
The condition is still under control in Dilli with the average higher side rentals hovering around INR 2500 to 3000 a month as compared to Mumbai where the average rental hovers around INR 10000 a month for a jhuggi. Wow that’s exorbitant….
