Saddi Dilli’s National Philatelic Museum is located in Dak Bhawan, Sardar Patel Chowk on Parliament Street or Sansad Marg. The National Philatelic Museum houses the first stamp issued in India by the Sindh Dak in the year 1854. Besides Indian stamps issued by the Government of India and the princely states, this museum boasts of a rich collection of first day covers, foreign stamps and special cancellations on display.
The Department of posts inaugurated the National Philatelic Museum on 11th July, 2011 and this museum exhibits rare postage stamps from across the world and provides a platform to philatelists to show their collections. The museum was built with an idea of providing an enhanced and interactive platform for promoting philately in India and to stimulate interest for stamp collection among children.
The museum has bays dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and the prime ministers of India, along with freedom fighters. It also has stamps on several themes such as science and technology, transport and wildlife. There are stamps from abroad, and displays from the Army Postal Service and India Security Press, Nashik. The museum also has an amphi-theatre for holding talk shows and presentations along with a reference library. In the artist’s corner, the department has showcased the actual designing of a stamp and plans to invite artists from time to time to give live demonstrations.
The National Philatelic Museum, is a surely a ‘philatelist’s paradise’. The exclusive collection of rare stamps of pre and post-independence period is what attracts tourists the most. One can gather a lot of information about the postal history of India. A deep insight into India’s Philatelic Heritage can be gained from this National Philatelic Museum. One can easily get their hands on the stamps they like by purchasing them from the sale counter just outside the museum.
The museum operates from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM on every day except Saturday’s and Sunday’s.
