Amongst the posh international embassies close to the heart of Saddi Dilli in Chanakyapuri lies the National Rail Museum. Established on the 1st February, 1977 the museum spreads over an area of 10 acres in Chanakyapuri. The museum is a one of its kind museum in the entire country since it houses an attractive collection of the rich history and heritage of the Indian railways. The compilation of trains, locomotives, steam engines and carriages preserved in the museum are worth every single minute spent here.
The museum comprises of both live exhibits as well as non-working models in an indoor gallery. A toy train is run around the campus for the visitors on a regular basis every day. On some special days, the Old Patiala Steam Monorail is run on the tracks. The museum authorities arrange for its visitors an exciting journey, showing the rich heritage that Indian Railway has beheld for so many years and how it has helped in cultural and economic development of the nation till today.
The National Rail Museum is a unique museum that has an exotic and fascinating collection of over 100 real size exhibits from not only the largest employer of the world but also one of the world’s oldest Railways the Indian Railways. Static and working models, signaling equipment, antique furniture, historical photographs and related literature etc. are on displayed in this museum. The line-up of old coaches includes the handsome Prince of Wales Saloon, built in 1875. Not to be outdone is the Maharaja of Mysore’s Saloon built in 1899 with its brocade covered chairs and an elegant rosewood bed; one can peer in through the windows for a good look.
There are beautiful models dating back to the olden days on display. The trains and coaches mark the development typical to each era of progress. The first steam engine that traveled within the Indian sub-continent is being displayed in the museum. The locomotives are show cased in the open and hence, one gets a feeling as if one is walking into a garden full of railways!
The main attraction in the National Rail Museum is the Joy Train ride. This train takes you to a journey which depicts the 153 year old rich history of the Indian Railways. With a very nominal amount, one can enjoy the ride of this train and it assures to make your visit exciting. A children park in the vicinity promises a great time for the young ones as well.
This museum has a wealth of information on Indian Railways. Some of the wagons that were meant for the transport of the rich are on display and are the Vice-regal Dining Car, Prince of Wales Saloon, Maharaja of Mysore’s Saloon and Maharaja of Baroda’s Saloon.
The star attraction of this museum is the Fairy Queen, built in 1855 and considered to be one of the best preserved steam locomotive engines of her age. A ride in joy train and mono rail (PSMT) is the most exciting experience besides boating. Do not miss the handsome Fire Engine on your way out.
