The zone of North Dilli is nothing but the new name or zoning for the good ol’ Old Dilli and it is a very important part in the landscape of Saddi Dilli. North Dilli has the trace of some great monuments that Mughals left behind like Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Dilli’s old and popular markets are located in North Dilli. Places like Chandni Chowk, Kashmiri Gate and Darya Ganj are located here which today serve as the commercial hub for all traditional things. It happens to be one of the densely populated areas of the urban Dilli. Civil Lines, Model Town and Ashok Vihar are amongst the posh localities of North Dilli.
North Dilli also has the charm and glory of having the exquisite campus of Dilli University, which is the main education hub of Dilli’s undergraduate and post graduate studies. Another important university called Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, also happens to be in here. Both these Universities beckon students from all parts of India and there has been an increase in the influx of foreign scholars from other countries who come here for research in different faculties. Existence of Dilli University has a special importance for North Dilli and this is the reason why it is also called the “North Campus” of the Dilli University.
Famous colleges in North Campus include Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Khalsa College, Faculty Of Management Studies (FMS), Kirorimal College, Miranda House, IP College, Hans Raj College and Delhi School of Economics. Presence of these colleges and the university itself has made the area being recognized as a youth hub and the much sought after education destination for young aspiring students. It has also helped the area economically in terms of business, consultancy and educational institutes, which have flourished at an alarming rate.
When we talk of North Dilli, we do refer to North Dilli’s Azadpur Mandi which has bagged the title of “Mandi of National Importance”. The mandi or market is a hub of vegetables, fruits and dry fruits. The Mandi transports fruits and vegetables to different parts of Delhi and other neighboring states.
North Dilli has a vast network of buses and railway terminals. The Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Sarai Rohilla, Subzi Mandi, Kishan Ganj and Old Delhi Railway stations are among the main terminals of North Dilli.
Some suburbs of North Delhi are Civil Lines, Model Town, Pitampura, Kingsway Camp, Daryaganj, Kashmere Gate and Dilli Gate.
Some important hospitals in North Dilli are Aruna Asaf Ali, Sushrut Trauma Centre, Bara Hindu Rao, St. Stephen’s, Tirath Ram and Sant Parmanand Hospital.
