Dilli being culturally and historically very rich is bound to have many tourist attractions for the past era’s. We have tried to bring to you a list of tourist attractions in Delhi (Dilli) which are a must visit when you are in the walled city.
Dilli is the largest metropolis of India and eighth largest of the World. It started as Indraprastha, a small settlement by Pandavas within the Khandva forest near river Yamuna around 2500 BC. Later in 736 AD, Tomar kings established a new city named Lal Kot not far from this historic land. Since then, 88+ rulers from 12 dynasties tried to change the face and fate of Saddi Dilli and established 9 cities next to each other. There are over 1300 monuments, which still exist within the boundaries of these historic cities namely Indraprastha, Lal Kot & Qila Rai Pithora, Dar-Ul-khilafat (aka Siri), Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Ferozabad, Deenpanah and Shergarh, Shahjahanabad and the Lutyen’s Dilli.
Being one of the most historic capitals in the world, Dilli has many tourist sites it consists of 3 World Heritage Sites, 174 National Protected Monuments and over hundreds of state protected monuments and several unprotected and lesser known monuments. In Old Dilli, there are attractions like mosques, forts and other monuments that represent India’s history. The important places in Old Dilli include the majestic Red Fort. New Dilli, however, is a modern city designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. New Dilli houses many government buildings and embassies, apart from places of historical interest. The Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
