During the rush hour around 6:30 in the evening I was kind of surprised to spot an Auto (three-wheeler) Wali zipping around the streets of the capitals commercial jungle Connaught Place. Sunita Chaudhary neatly dressed and well clad in a uniform, which is difficult to spot on the regular Auto (three-wheeler) drivers, was happily ferrying passengers across the town. This is certainly not the most common site one can see in Saddi Dilli.
With the crimes against women increasing by the day, it is definitely a brave decision on Sunita’s part to take up driving a three-wheeler as a career. And more so because it is a domain which is predominantly male oriented. From standing in long queues to get a tank full of CNG, to dealing with bad and at times drunk customers, to fix a flat tyre or attend some immediate breakdown repairs are some of the routine chores which a three-wheeler driver needs to tackle on a regular basis. Needless to mention the terrific traffic cops of Saddi Dilli.
I also feel that generally women find it a little more challenging when it comes to recalling routes or taking short cuts en-route. Nonetheless the courage displayed by this young lady is definitely commendable and her sporty attitude towards her work is very well reflected in her confident smile. Kudos..
